1. Take a before ‘photo’
So that you can look back with pride take a snapshot of your starting financial position today. Screenshots of your bank accounts, including any credit cards and loans, will do – nothing fancy. Read more.
An easy way is to do step 3 below and take a screen shot once all of your accounts are linked.
2. Define your why
Reflect on why you want to change how you manage your money. Define a tangible goal, such as:
- Repaying your credit card debt by [date]
- Saving [$x] by [date] toward [goal]
3. Begin to discover where it all went
Get a headstart on designing your system by identifying where you currently spend your money.
To do this I suggest you sign up to the tracking app Money Brilliant. The free version is all you will need. Then link all of your existing bank accounts.
Just get the app tracking for now so there’s some data ready when we need it. Don’t worry about using the Budgeting or Bills features, because I’ll teach you a better way.
